The Water Clock

Fenaa Alawal, curated by Sara Almutlaq, 2024.

The Water Clock recreates the universal experience of waiting at an embassy, waiting for a visa, waiting for a permit, waiting to be admitted. Set in the middle of the embassy’s waiting room, the work resembles one of the oldest tools for measuring time, the glass water clock dating back to 4000 BCE. Here, a cast water clock is designed not only to keep time, but to evoke a sense of the passage of time as a reminder to those who are constantly in limbo, waiting for embassy doors to open, waiting for visas to study abroad and waiting for normal life to begin.
